Imprisoning kids for cash

justiceHere is a hypothetical scenario: Suppose that an Iranian judge were proved to have sent hundreds of innocent children and teenagers to a privately run detention centre, deliberately denying them any legal council in court, and that he only took 1–2 minutes for the legal process for each child. Encouraging our kids to gamble

footie1I settled down to watch Everton play Liverpool. Good game, but what disturbed me were the adverts for internet gambling sites popping up in the background. How can we convince our children that gambling is bad when these ads are the backdrops to our sports heroes? Or is it OK now to gamble?

Too fat to fly

air-india2-12It’s been a while since I posted here. I’ve been travelling and busy, but a few things have been in my mind which I hope to offload here soon.

A few weeks ago, Air India sacked 10 air hostesses for being over the weight limit for the height and age. They were given time to reduce their weight by some 3kg, but failed to do so. More »

His genius was such that the system is used today unchanged, and allows the blind to read at some 120 words per minute. Braille invented his system at the age of 15, and died by the age of 43 of tuberculosis. More »

Amazing interactive 3D display

mini_ar_adSecond time I have been amazed with technology today! This is a clever ad for a mini. The magazine has a bold black and white pattern of circles. You go to a web page (in German), switch on your webcam and hold the magazine (or a print of the pattern from the web site) in front of the webcam. More »

Don’t type, Swype

swype1Here is an innovative way to input text on touchscreens. The guys who brought us T9, the predictive text input method now on most mobile phones, have now come up with a new way of entering words without lifting the finger or stylus off the screen. The computer will guess which word we are trying to type. I look forward to trying it out on the iPhone when it is released.
